Hi All,

We got the below alert from OEM Grid Control

Target Name=LISTENER_USAZDBA40

Severity=Critical
Message=The listener is down: Although a Listener with name "LISTENER_USAZDBA4", is running on this host at port: "1521", it was not started using this target's "LISTENER.ORA" file.

CORRECTIVE ACTION: To monitor this "EM Listener Target" with its present configuration, you must stop the currently running listener process, and start it again using the Listener Parameter file: /opt/oracle/db/network/admin/listener.ora . Alternatively, you can update this target's "LISTENER.ORA Location" parameter with the location of the currently running Listener, which was started using: /opt/oracle/asm/network/admin/listener.ora.
Notification Rule Name=Listener Availability
Notification Rule Owner=SYSMAN

Should we have a seperate listener one for the ASM instance and one for the RDBMS instance , and both are in different locations .

Do we really 2 listeners for the same host ?

Please clarify my doubt.

Regards,
Raj

Totally upto you.
By separating the listeners you are separating the services.
Thats it.

No Mahesh,

What I mean , there is a listener in the ASM home and one in the RDBMS home . And both are using the same port no. 1521. I know we can use the multiple listener's with the same port No. But if you can see the OEM alert below, I was confused what made it to trigger that alert .

Message=The listener is down: Although a Listener with name "LISTENER_USAZDBA4", is running on this host at port: "1521", it was not started using this target's "LISTENER.ORA" file.

A small clarification what made it to trigger that

Your configuration.
I do not use OEM grid.
>>it was not started using this target's "LISTENER.ORA" file
It seems the OEM is looking into a wrong listener.ora.
Go to the host/target (or whatever it means these days) and
Just use the right one.

Hi Mahesh,

Thanks for that Metalink Note. It really solved me to a great extent .

Thanks again .

And one more thing can we have the listener in any location and run it . And how soon the listener.log gets updated by PMON.

You mean, the listener being in a remote machine accessing the database?
If so, it is possible but not recommended.
In the later version of Oracle, You can administer the listener
from remote and You may want to turn that "OFF" too ( to prevent DOS attacks).

I have no idea with respect to an exact measure.
